Gabriel DropOut Episode 1 Review – “The Day I Knew I Could Never Go Back”

The otaku angel we all can relate to has arrived.

(Spoilers in this review)

Well, maybe not everyone can relate to her. But I sort of did, wahaha.

The main character is an overachieving angel named Gabriel. However, she falls into depravity (aka she becomes a gaming otaku) shortly after being sent down to Earth where she can learn how to live like a human. It’s some kind of rite of passage. She also has no intentions of going back to heaven.

My thoughts on Gabriel DropOut thus far:

  • Gabriel is closer to acting like a demon than her actual demon friend, Vignette.
  • What happens if humans find out they’re angels or demons? Maybe that’ll be addressed later.
  • Satanichia is an overdramatic demon who actually sucks at being demonic compared to Gabriel.
  • I would not forgive my friend if I was stood up for two hours. Vignette, you are a good girl.
  • Turns out Raphiel is a sadist / troll. It’s a bit of a shock hearing Hanazawa Kana’s voice such an interesting character, but I like it.
  • I’m already shipping demons with angels.
  • The song that’s played at the end of the episode is actually nuts to listen to as it alternates between angelic voices and heavy rock melodies. But it sure is colorful.

tl;dr – Gabriel DropOut continues the trend of otaku girls who are cute yet annoying. If you enjoyed Himouto! Umaru-chan, I think this show would be right up your alley. It’s rather funny, but I’m seeing a few animation issues already.

The most promising student in Angel School, Gabriel!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h34m27s961
Tapris, Gabriel’s kouhai.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h33m58s844
Guess they’ll both be schoolmates.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h43m18s548
Noble goal!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h46m00s678
This is where it all begins.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h48m45s003
What a clean room!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h49m15s448
And then she became corrupt and sloppy.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h50m01s804
Seems like Gabriel is friends with Vignette, who seems to be an upstanding demon.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h55m51s927
Satanichia doing dastardly deeds!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h56m11s662
Meanwhile, Gabriel
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h56m28s702
is even better at being
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h56m45s138
at being a bad person
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h56m50s529
than actual demons.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-18h59m17s677
Satanichia imagining her evil deeds as payback.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h00m00s762
She seems excited!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h00m06s259
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h00m10s854
She’s too soft to be a demon.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h00m17s063
So she ended up not doing her homework to show off her demon pride and to be evil.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h04m04s497
Scariest teacher in 2017!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h05m15s731
So evil!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h05m34s206
You don’t mess around, do you, Satanichia?
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h05m39s312
Her evil laugh starts off weak, but she improves by the second.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h05m45s759
W-what about your pride as a demon?!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h05m49s710
Oh. ;_;
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h07m10s818
Gabriel slept in and stood Vignette up!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h07m25s068
GABRIEL
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h08m19s533
Vignette’s too soft to be a demon, too!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h09m15s579
Never mind!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h09m55s782
It’s pure, alright. Pure black, that is.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h10m47s329
Oh, she’s aware.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h10m56s351
She didn’t.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h11m11s283
SHOCK!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h32m48s439
Well, Gabriel isn’t exactly a good angel, but you’re asking an angel about this?
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h30m08s755
COCKROACHES AAAAA
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h29m47s438
Justified reaction.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h30m30s042
Truer things have never been said.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h31m02s380
Also justified.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h32m03s974
Vignette should have held back a bit, though. Probably.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h34m42s938
Oh, it’s Gabriel’s friend, Raphiel!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h35m05s272
Satanichia losing to a dog.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h35m40s818
Excitement for Raphiel!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h42m32s634
Seriously, what’s wrong with Heaven’s angels?
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h42m41s579
I agree!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h42m46s737
She’s denying the yuri?!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h43m08s692
Raphiel really likes Gabriel. Or at least seeing her suffer.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h42m57s579
Very convincing.
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h44m12s667
Oh, she bought melon bread for Satanichia!
vlcsnap-2017-01-09-19h44m33s269
Aaaand then her sadist urges come through.

    1. It feels both right and wrong. How amazing.

Edsamac brought up some valid points, but I’m still hopeful, yeah! You can just read episode reviews and reap the benefits without having to to sit through the show, yay! So sly of D!

    1. I think the show is relatively cute and can overcome any irritation the characters may cause.
Maybe animation issues is too strong of a phrase, but it’s a bit of a letdown when some characters don’t look great in some frames and scenes. Shouldn’t be a problem for the most part, I think.

      It’s definitely hilarious, haha.

  1. The main problem I had with this pilot screening was that the premise doesn’t feel that inspired. That and the fact that they ripped off a joke from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

But it has the potential to be a good show. It just has to up the ante on the jokes and actually use its premise to more comedic effect, aside from the obvious comedic irony (i.e. angels doing bad things; demons doing good things, etc.).

  2. This seems pretty funny. That scene with the juice really tickled me. Seems like I have a bunch of “funny” shows this season already and I don’t have any room for more. Maybe if maid dragon doesn’t work out…
